How to Keep Your Jewelry Looking New!

We love jewelry and here are some easy tips and tricks you can use to keep your beloved jewels looking good as new for a long long time….

  • While there are ways to fix broken and mildly damaged jewelry, you want to try and take preventative measures to avoid letting your favorite pieces break in the first place. The first step is to make sure you have the right place to store your jewelry properly in a cool, dry place and clean it every once in a while. Try to keep various jewelry pieces separately to avoid scratching, tangling or chipping. Use a box or bag with partitions or compartments that allows you to store your pieces in individual spaces.

  • It’s far easier to prevent your jewelry from getting ruined at home, it’s when you are on the go that you really need to be careful. If you are travelling, don’t just dump your jewelry in your bag. Use a travel case or pouch that will keep your delicate jewelry safe. There are various travel friendly bags that have individual compartments designed to store everything from rings, to necklaces and bracelets. If you are travelling with expensive pieces, you should opt for a higher level of protection, preferably a bag with a locking system.

  • You can clean most jewelry with a little bit of soapy warm water and a soft, non-metallic brush. Another simple DIY hack is to use a soft bristle toothbrush, just be sure that you don’t use that toothbrush to clean anything else, as you don’t want to transfer harmful chemicals onto your jewelry.
If you are cleaning gold or silver plated jewelry, then there are a few simple mixes you can make at home to give these pieces a gleaming shine. To clean dull and discolored sterling silver jewelry use warm soapy water and rinse with a soft cloth, next dip in cold water and then finally buff until dry or make a thick paste with 1/4 cup baking soda and 2 tablespoons water, apply with a damp sponge, gently rub, rinse, and buff dry.  Gold chains require a little extra care since they easily rust. This simple jewelry cleaning technique using baking soda and soapy water or cover with a light coating of baking soda and a bit of vinegar and rinse clean will restore it to its former glory. No matter what type of jewelry you own, there is a DIY hack online.

  • These are some things that can cause additional damage or wear and tear to your jewelry. To prevent damage, be sure to avoid the following:      Chlorine can cause surface damage to most metals, so be sure you dive in the pool sans jewelry.
      Avoid contact with perfume, hairspray, lotion and domestic cleaning products as these can cause damage to metal and gemstones
      The Sun’s harmful rays are also known to affect the durability and color of certain gemstones, so be careful about leaving it out in the sun in order to avoid fading, bleaching or darkening of these precious gems.
